The most critical element between people is their ability to communicate one with another. The word communication is derived from the Latin word “communis”, which means to have in common. Commonalty is essential to every form of love. Studies consistently reveal that the primary cause of marital problems and divorces is a lack of communication. Communication is the process of sharing thoughts and feelings, through both verbal as well as non-verbal means, with another person so that he or she understands what you are attempting to express. A common misconception stems from not recognizing that effective communication does not happen by accident! It is a skill which requires the discipline of development! There are three essential components of the communication process: talking, listening, and caring. Because we all struggle with varying degrees of ‘self-advancement’, we have a tendency to develop selective hearing. Failing to listen has led to actions which fail to honor the One who created us with twice as many ears as he did mouths! So many misunderstandings could be avoided by simply taking corrective steps to listen attentively to what others are attempting to say to us. This simple practice not only benefits our relations with those in the workplace, but enhances the relationship we share with our spouses, our children, our relatives and, most importantly, our God!
Have a blessed day and remember the One who gave it to you! Kevin
